REVIVING THE RURAL SETTLEMENT

The site is located in Thirumukkudal village, at the outskirts of the Kanchipuram downtown, India. The Village lacks proper infrastructure development such as schools and public gathering place. Thus the proposal is focussed on designing a school to increase the illiteracy rate in the village, along with a communal gathering place and play-zone area.

In this project, I had attempted to solve these problems by a design solution, which can be utilised as a prototype in such other villages with comparatively similar contexts throughout the peri-urban settlements.

6. Restroom

DESIGN

The design revolves around the basic concepts of Sustainable and low-cost planning with effective Passive Cooling techniques. The idea is to use the locally available materials for construction and to implement various vernacular construction methods which can be done by the local villagers themselves.

The walls can be constructed using cob, adobe or brick with lime or surkhi as mortar. The truss structure are made using locally available timber and bamboo. Secondary roof is made with thatch, straw-bale or bamboo. This design serves as a typical module for rural settlements with similar context
